Asst Prof Benny Tan Zhi Peng

Assistant Professor

Benny graduated from the National University of Singapore in 2012 and was on the Dean’s List. He later earned an MPhil in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge, receiving the Manuel López-Rey Graduate Prize (2019) as top student across both MPhil programmes. Benny has served as Deputy Public Prosecutor and State Counsel at the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and also as a pro bono defence counsel. At NUS Law, he teaches criminal law and evidence, and has taught legal skills to both undergraduate and graduate students.

His research focuses on sentencing law, criminal evidence, and procedure. Benny has received multiple NUS Faculty of Law Teaching Excellence Awards (AY15/16 to AY23/24) and the NUS Annual Teaching Excellence Award (AY17/18 and 2025). He is currently Professorial Fellow with the AGC-Legal Service Academy, Fellow with the NUS Teaching Academy, and Director of the Legal Skills Programme at NUS Law.
